Education & Qualifications:
Degree in marine-related fields. Degree in law particularly in shipping law, is an advantage
Work Experience:
3 - 5 years' work experience in marine claims handling, in particular P&I crew claims; good knowledge of P&I
rules and marine insurance covers and conditions
Job-Specific Skills:
Good understanding of marine insurance industry and P&I rules
Knowledge and understanding of Collective Bargaining Agreements
Analytical thinking
Able to work independently, under pressure and meet tight deadlines
Good interpersonal and communication skills
Very good negotiation abilities
Good people management skills, team player

Claims handling in respect of crew illness / injury (Crew P&I)
- Early involvement from the time an incident occurs until closure of the claim. Handling of all crew claims in co-operation with the fleet personnel teams the SMCs and P&I Clubs/Brokers. Ensure prompt claim notification to the insurers and monitor the progress of the claim.
- Close communication with the fleet personnel teams of the SMCs from the time a crew member is reported ill and/or injured until the time the crew is being released from a hospital and repatriated home. Once the crew member arrives at his home country, ensure further follow-up with the CSCs to confirm that the crew is receiving appropriate medical treatment until fitness.
- Liaising with P&I Clubs, local Correspondents, medical auditing firms in order to resolve claims in the most cost efficient and timely manner. Submission of claim reimbursement as soon as all costs are collected and follow-up for quick recovery.
- Ensure that all claims are properly recorded in PAL Insurance Tool and claims database is always updated. All claims to be well supported with respective reports, remarks and reserves / claim estimates. Ensure that claims estimated are in line with the P&I Clubs reserves. Any discrepancies to be discussed with good arguments. Review claims once a month
- Follow-up with the SMCs to ensure that the local finance teams have assigned respective Analysis Codes to be used for booking all expenses related to crew claim. Coordinate with the finance teams to arrange any advance hospital payment required prior crew members admission. Consolidate the expenses for both the sick / injured crew and its replacing crew, including but not limited to port embarkation / disembarkation costs, flight tickets, hotel accommodation, medical expenses at port / on board and post sign-off medical expenses, sickness wages, death / disability benefits, etc. Employers liability towards the crew is based on the terms and conditions of the contract of employment and / or applicable CBA. Ensure that we meet and comply with contractual obligations towards sick / injured crew
- Monitor and scrutinise hospital charges prior payment, if possible. Request for estimated costs at the time a crewmember is admitted to a hospital. Be acquainted with local medical expenses to safeguard Owners interests and ensure that costs are reasonable and customary
- Prepare ad-hoc reports upon Owners’ / SMCs’ request
- Analyse crew claims data, identify risk clusters and propose suggestions to reduce claims and losses respectively
- Communicate loss prevention circulars and risk alerts to the relevant departments within the SMC or within BSM. Receive and analyse external sources of crew claim losses
- Allocate and process premium invoices for BS and BSM slips. Prepare BSM slip P&I and FD&D invoices, inclusive of BSM commission, for re-charging to BSM clients
