We are looking to appoint a Rugby League Writer to work as our Wigan Warriors reporter for Wigan Today.

We are here to serve our fans and are dedicated to producing more content we know keeps supporters entertained, engaged and coming back for more.

Who We Are Looking For

  • Understanding of the types of content which drive rugby league audience online
  • SEO knowledge
  • Capable of producing fast and accurate copy to tight deadlines
  • Awareness of writing different article formats from explainers to news and analysis
  • Ability to come up with original content ideas on a daily basis
  • Able to adapt to writing rugby league content for several different teams on a daily basis
  • Successful candidates will have a keen eye for a story and an understanding of what drives audiences
  • Ability to identify topics which our brands can realistically become a search authority on
  • An understanding of how to optimise content to adhere to SEO best practice
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced media environment with the organisational skills to plan ahead
  • Demonstrable familiarity with analytics tools
  • A team player: able to work closely with digital colleagues across the business
  • Living on the patch with a great knowledge of the area and what makes people in the region tick

Skills/experience

  • Strong track record of producing content which works for search and provides a great experience for readers
  • Experience of working in a newsroom, content/marketing agency or on a digital platform
  • A strong writer with excellent attention to detail and accuracy
  • A good understanding of tone
  • Experience in using SEO tools such as Google Trends
  • Previous experience of using a website content management system
  • Strong understanding of SEO principles and best practice
  • Familiarity with basic photo editing tools
  • Knowledge of media law and the Editor’s Code of Practice
  • A good knowledge of using social media as a means of reaching audiences
  • Experience in using analytics tools such as Google Analytics, Chartbeat or Parse.ly

Please note this role is remote however there is a requirement that you must be residing in the UK
