Job Summary

The City of Homewood is seeking to hire a Parks Maintenance Superintendent I to plan, assign, train, review, and evaluate work performance of subordinate employees and volunteers engaged in the maintenance, repair, installation, and construction of recreation facilities, parks, playgrounds and related equipment, or other high-profile areas in a medium to large size jurisdiction. Parks Maintenance Superintendents I also coordinate comprehensive recreation and sports programs through a Park Board, Youth Association, or other similar entity. Incumbents in this class receive work objectives and resources available from their supervisor. Parks Maintenance Superintendents I develop deadlines, projects, and work to be done independently or with consultation from their supervisor. Incumbents in this class receive work assignments in written and oral form from a department head and are given in terms of broad objectives. Parks Maintenance Superintendents I plan and carry out the assignments, resolve most of the conflicts that arise, and coordinate the work with others. Parks Maintenance Superintendents I interpret policy on their own initiative in terms of established objectives and keep the supervisor informed on progress, potentially controversial matters, or far-reaching implications.

Minimum Qualifications

The following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position:

  • Driver's license.
  • Experience in building maintenance, performing tasks such as changing an HVAC filter, changing light ballasts, and basic plumbing and electrical repair.
  • Experience using grounds maintenance equipment such as a zero-turn lawnmower, weed eater, skid steer, backhoe, and dump truck for landscaping and other grounds maintenance projects.
  • Experience leading employees on building or grounds maintenance projects.

Preferred Qualifications

The following are job-related qualifications deemed desirable by Merit System agencies. These qualifications may be considered by a hiring agency when reviewing applications and inviting candidates to participate in subsequent steps in the selection processes.

  • Alabama Certified Pesticide Applicator's License.
  • Plumbing Certification or License.
  • Electrical Certification or License.

Typical Job Duties

  • Prepares bid specifications and oversees the work of contractors who are working on various projects, including capital projects, by drawing up plans, coordinating with architects/engineers, selecting contractors, overseeing the work of contractors, keeping records of work done, meeting with city leaders, and reviewing invoices in order to ensure projects are completed correctly and in a timely manner.
  • Accommodates the needs of citizens by directing, developing, organizing, and administering daily operations of parks maintenance, facilities, and personnel.
  • Manages various projects by assigning work objectives, allocating available resources, determining deadlines/expectations, outlining scope of responsibilities, and delegating work to be done.
  • Supervises, plans, delegates, and reviews the work of subordinates to verify that work is assigned and completed in a proper and timely manner.
  • Directs and participates in the operation, maintenance, and repair of parks and recreation facilities, grounds, and equipment.
  • Conducts research in order to obtain cost estimates/quotes for information, products, services, etc. related to goals and objectives of the department.
  • Ensures equipment and supplies are received from vendors and delivered to the correct worksite in a timely manner to ensure maintenance crew has the necessary resources.
  • Meets with various groups (e.g., church groups and school sports teams) to determine group needs for special events such as softball/baseball tournaments, barbeques, fundraisers, etc.
  • Directs the installation or replacement of playgrounds, benches, plaques/signs, walkways, and various park fixtures (e.g. water fountains, lighting, fencing, and dog stations).

Physical Demands

Job involves moderate physical exertion required for occasional prolonged periods of lifting, carrying, balancing, climbing, and crouching. Job requires occasional ability to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Job may require walking and/or standing for prolonged periods and over long distances often on unstable ground (e.g., loose dirt at construction sites).

Work Environment

Work is conducted both indoors in an office setting as well as regular outside work requiring the ability to walk on uneven terrain. Job may be exposed to weather conditions, such as extreme hot or cold temperatures, or other potentially hazardous conditions such as near animal or wildlife such as snakes, rodents, etc. Additionally, job may require working with angry/irate customers or citizens.
