Job Summary
The City of Birmingham is seeking highly qualified Fire Prevention Inspectors to conduct comprehensive building inspections across various structures, including restaurants, sports arenas, shopping centers, office buildings, and more. The primary responsibility of this role is to identify fire hazards and ensure compliance with international fire codes, ISP standards, and relevant federal, state, and local regulations.
Fire Prevention Inspectors will also assess fire protection, detection, and suppression systems and equipment. In addition to conducting inspections, they are responsible for completing detailed fire inspection reports, educating the public on fire safety and prevention, and may serve as fire department representatives at public meetings to provide vital fire safety information.

- Conducts fire inspections in existing commercial and municipal buildings and new construction by visually identifying potential fire hazards and ensuring electrical, plumbing, gas, and HVAC systems satisfy local, state, and federal fire hazard and prevention codes in order to comply with relevant fire inspection schedules, laws, and permit codes.
- Creates fire prevention and inspection reports by documenting code violations, reviewing field notes, and interviewing relevant business persons in order to document potential hazards and ensure they are rectified.
- Plans and schedules work assignments by conducting research, contacting relevant parties via email or phone, and setting up meetings in order to follow established annual inspection requirements for existing buildings and/or meet new construction inspection demands.
- Engages in activities designed to ensure professional development, awareness of developments in the field, and knowledge of relevant practices, rules, laws, policies, and/or guidelines.
- Inspects buildings to locate hazardous conditions and fire code violations, such as accumulations of combustible material, electrical wiring problems, and inadequate or non-functional fire exits.
- Inspects fire protection or fire detection systems to verify that such systems are installed and functioning in accordance with appropriate laws, codes, ordinances, regulations, and standards.
- Reviews blueprints and plans for new or remodeled buildings to ensure the structures meet fire safety codes during inspections.
