Job Summary
The City of Birmingham is seeking a well-qualified Latent Fingerprint Examiner Supervisor. Latent Fingerprint Examiner Supervisors are responsible for assigning and monitoring subordinates work and performing skilled and technical duties in the collection, examination, preparation and classification of latent fingerprints. Employees in this job class perform a variety of supervisory duties, including approving leave requests, assigning work, training staff on policies and procedures, and evaluating subordinates’ work. An employee in this job class follows well established procedures to complete their work, and work is reviewed under the general supervision of a Lieutenant, Captain, or Forensic Services Manager through meetings, regular reports, and performance evaluations.

Job is primarily sedentary involving sitting for long periods of time, but may involve occasional walking or standing for brief periods. Work Environment

- Completion of coursework or training programs related to Latent Print Examination (These may include training or coursework through accredited colleges, the International Association for Identification, Ron Smith and Associates, etc.).
- Experience working in a laboratory environment that emphasizes strict procedures, documentation, and standardized processes.
- Experience handling case work involving physical evidence relative to criminal investigations.
- Experience using AFIS ( Automated Fingerprint Identification System).

- College degree in laboratory based natural or physical science.
- International Association for Identification Certification.
- Experience working as a latent fingerprint examiner.
- Experience teaching in a classroom setting.
- Performs administrative duties such as completing department reports, processing and maintaining records, and updating files and paperwork using digital and analog filing methods and other office equipment in order to document the department’s activities and expenditures.
- Provides fingerprint services to the general public, local jurisdictions, and other agencies by recording, processing, documenting, and examining fingerprint cards using either digital biometric scanners or printer’s ink and print-card in order to verify an individual’s identification or provide proof of identification.
- Certifies fingerprints for requests made by the District Attorney’s office, task forces and other criminal justice units and agencies.
- Processes latent fingerprints using an Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) and visual assessment to categorize and classify prints and compare them with known fingerprint records in order to establish identity or non-identity of individual or suspect.
- Acts as an expert witness in court to testify on results of fingerprint examinations.
- Categorize fingerprints using the Henry Classification system (e.g., arches, loops, whorls, and composites) in order to establish print-specific identification.
- Processes fingerprint cards using an Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) for computer or visual comparison of prints from previous records to establish or confirm identity or non-identity of individuals.
- Engages in activities designed to ensure professional development, awareness of developments in the field, and knowledge of relevant practices, rules, laws, policies, and/or guidelines.
