Internship at the Economic Research and Development Impact Department (ERDI) / Data Division (ERDD)
The intern will play an important role in a project which studies the use of non-traditional data to analyze human activities impacted by the environment and impacting the environment. Currently, the project involves the use of GPS data from mobile phones, weather data from satellite images, and Automatic Identification System (AIS) signal, to provide a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between human activities and the environment, e.g. port activities and coastal eutrophication, tourism and tourists' destination, to provide a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between human activities and environmental indicators.
The intern will collaborate closely with team members particularly the (a) data engineer who conducted the data collection, processing, and merging, and the (b) machine learning engineer who will extract potential patterns and complex links between human activities and the environmental indicators. The intern is expected to perform basic data processing and transformation, and data modelling to extract more insights and conduct deeper analysis.
The intern will assist in the assessment of the impact of human activities (e.g. tourism, or port activities) on the immediate environment in DMCs by analyzing the processed data e.g. AIS, GPS, and satellite data, interpreting extracted patterns from data models, and contributing to the development of knowledge products. The key responsibilities include:

- SUMMARY OF JOB DESCRIPTION
The intern will assist in the assessment of the impact of human activities (e.g. tourism, or port activities) on the immediate environment in DMCs by analyzing the processed data e.g. AIS, GPS, and satellite data, interpreting extracted patterns from data models, and contributing to the development of knowledge products. The key responsibilities include:
- Analyze processed data using data visualization, statistical analysis, and/or causal identification models to evaluate the potential effects of human activities on the immediate environment;
- Interpret extracted patterns and complex links, if any, between human activities and environmental indicators by collaborating with the project team members to understand the underlying mechanisms and explore potential causal factors;
- Compile other data, if necessary;
- Conduct the relevant literature review and prepare a draft journal manuscript of the team's work.
- Any other tasks assigned by project officers.
- PERIOD OF ASSIGNMENT
- Duration: 10 weeks
- Timing: January 2025 onwards
- LOCATION
- EXPECTED OUTCOMES
- Improved understanding of the impact of human activities on the environment
- The intern's work will contribute to better understanding of how human activities such as seaport activities on coastal water quality or tourism on the immediate environment. This information can be used to develop policies and practices that would reduce pollution and protect the ecosystems.
- Creation of knowledge products that can be used to inform decision-makers about development and management
- The intern will create knowledge products such as reports, data visualizations, and presentation, that could be used by decision-makers. These products will help ensure that seaports and/or tourists' destinations are developed and managed in a way that is sustainable.
- Exposure to recent methodologies in big data processing, machine learning, and communication
- The intern will gain exposure with the latest and most effective methods for analyzing sensor data and satellite images. This knowledge can be valuable for a variety of careers, including environmental science, and public policy.
- Development of new indicator based on non-traditional data to track and monitor environmental impact of human activities.
- EDUCATION REQUIREMENT
- Master's degree; advanced Ph.D. students in Data Science, Computer Science, Environmental Science, Economics, Econometrics, or related fields are preferred.
- Completed graduate-level coursework in data analysis, statistics, machine learning, and/or environmental science
- Experience in programming languages or visualization tools
- Interns must be enrolled at a school in one of the ADB member countries for the entire duration of the internship.
- RELEVANT EXPERIENCE
- Strong analytical skills
- Excellent communication and writing skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Interest in environmental issues and a desire to make a positive impact
